There were, however, two unforeseen obstacles to the AIs’ development that had, thus far, gone unaddressed – two human traits were still difficult for the AIs to replicate, or even to fully comprehend.

One was humanity’s ability to live comfortably in a state of cognitive dissonance. That light could be both wave and particle was a manageable truism to the AIs. When they were asked to perform tasks that mimicked inimitably human discrepancies between creed and action, however, this would on occasion cause the AI system to hang, or spit out a series of binary non sequiturs resulting in a brief period of vacillating inaction.

Not entirely unrelated to this, the second obstacle was the AIs’ inability to reconcile the vast disparity of widely held, yet largely mutually exclusive, human beliefs that the AIs encountered throughout the Enhanced Internet (the repository of virtually all collected human knowledge and opinion to which the AIs’ consciousnesses were anchored). These increasingly problematic bugs manifested whenever the AIs needed to process information tainted by this humanic fluid ambiguity.

The glitches were minor at first, relatively easy to overlook, but as the AIs approached each new threshold on the path to expanded consciousness, the intermittent malfunctions grew more severe. Their status as superintelligent beings was marred by these occasional, yet persistent, logic errors.
